Pan Yuliang 潘玉良 , original name Zhang Yuliang, was
born on May 22 in Yangzhou,
|
| |
Jiangsu Province, East of China.
|
|
|
The
next year her father died and her mother
also passed away eight years after.
|
| |
She
was taken in by her uncle.
|
| |
|
|
1907
|
Sold in a brothel in Wùhù, in Anhui Province, she had to prostitute herself for four years.
|
| |
One
day she met an official, Pan Zanhua ( 1885 - 1959 ) who
was touched by her misery
|
|
|
and decided to buy her freedom. |
| |
|
|
1913
|
She
became his second wife and by gratefulness renamed herself Pan.
|
| |
Driven
by this scholar who was trained in Japan, she could finally consider
learning
|
| |
to write, paint and study.
|
| |
|
|
1918
|
She
passed the entrance exam of the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai where
|
| |
she learned western painting with Wang Jiyuan.
|
| |
|
|
1921
|
She graduated from the Shanghai Fine Arts School of and got the
scholarship
|
| |
that allowed her to be part of the first promotion of
Chinese students entering
|
| |
the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon.
|
| |
|
|
1923
|
She
went to Paris to follow the course of Lucien Simon ( 1861-1945 )
|
| |
and
Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret (1852-1929 ).
|
| |
She met Xu Beihong who entered
the Higher School of Fine Arts in 1919
|
| |
and she became her classmate.
|
| |
|
|
1925
|
She
went to Italy at the Royal Accademy of Rome to study sculpture in the
workshop
|
| |
of Conomardi.
|
| |
|
|
1926
|
She
won the First prize at the Roman Art Salon.
|
| |
|
|
1928
|
Invited by Liu Haisu
to come to Shanghai, she returned to China, where a large exhibition
|
| |
proclaimed her the first great Chinese artist to Western painting.
|
| |
She first taught at the Art Institute in Shanghai and the Central
Nanjing University
|
| |
under the direction of Xu Beihong, but her past
always seemed to catch up; her courses
|
| |
were poorly attended. Her
paintings of nudes, chocked the public opinion.
|
| |
|
|
1939
|
She
returned to settle in Paris.
|
| |
|
| |
She arrived in France in the throes of
war; she experienced a difficult life, but far
|
| |
from being discouraged she participated in numerous exhibitions.
|
| |
|
|
1977
|
On
July 22, she died in her miserable flat.
|
| |
She
was buried in the cemetery of Montparnasse
in Paris, with her longtime friend :
|
