|
Ju Ming 朱銘 was born on January 20, in Miaoli, Taiwan.
|
|
He was the eleventh children of his family.
|
|
|
1951
|
At 13 years old, he quitted school to work in a local small shop.
|
|
|
1953
|
He did training during three years and four month with the woodcarver
|
|
Lee chin-Chuan specialized in in statuary for Buddhist temples.
|
|
|
1957
|
He was nominated a
master craftsman.
|
|
|
1959
|
He moved toTungshiao and opened his own workshop and recruited apprentices..
|
|
He worked with wood
but also uses bronze, ceramic, steel.
|
|
He sold his sculptures in
Taipei, Keelung and Kaohsiung.
|
|
|
1961
|
He married Chen Fu-Mei, a young woman from his
hometown whom he represented
|
|
in his sculpture: a girl playing with the sand.
|
|
Due to the lack of business knowledges, his company went bankrupt
|
|
and
he decided to devote himself entirely to his profession as an artist.
|
|
|
1966
|
He received the
Award Sculpture at Art Taiwan 21.
|
|
|
1968
|
He became a student
of Yuyu Yangqui who taught him modern sculpture,
|
|
during eight years.
|
|
|
1976
|
His first exhibition
at the National Museum of History was a success
|
|
and secured his reputation.
|
|
|
1977
|
He exhibited at
Central Museum inTokyo.
|
|
His Taichi woodcarvings series won critical acclaim in Japan.
|
|
|
1980
|
He left his wife and
children to move to the United States.
|
|
He settled in New
York where he created his series Living World.
|
|
During his first
exhibition at Max Huchinson gallery in New York, all his works.
|
|
are sold.
|
|
|
|
Therefore, his fame became international : Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong,
|
|
Japan, but also the United Kingdom and France.
|
|
|
1987
|
To store his work, he planned to build a museum in Chinshan, Northern Taiwan.
|
|
It took him twelve years to complete it.
|
|
|
2000
|
He added 20 new
sculptures : Taichi Arch to complete his Taichi series.
|
|
|
2002
|
Cercle d'Art Editions published a catalog of Ju Ming sculpture’s in Europe
|
|
and in the United States.
|
|
|
2005
|
He exposed Living world series - Armed forces works, 300 sculptures commemorating
|
|
the battles of the war..
|
|
|
2007
|
He was the winner of the 18th
Fukuoka Asian Culture Award.
|
|
|
|
He lives and works in Taiwan. |
|
|
|
Ju Ming committed suicide 22.04 2023, at the age of 85. |
