He grew up in Northwest China, in Pingliang, Gansu Province, in a poor family.

He studied conducting at the Beijing Military Academy, then music theory

Persecuted for his opinions, he was exiled and imprisoned in Shanxi Province.

He then worked as a laborer and directed the orchestra of the Shanxi Dance Ensemble.

Rehabilitated, he returned to Beijing and discovered Western composition.

1993

He participated in the Music Festival of Contemporary Chinese Composers in Suny Buffalo.

1999

He was appointed composer-in-residence of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra.

He composed his 6th Symphony for the Beijing Olympic Games.
