Tan Dun 谭盾 was born in Changsha Hunan Province China.
|
|
|
|
During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to work in the rice fields
|
|
of Huangjin. He learned to play traditional Chinese string instruments,
|
|
then joined the orchestra as a violist.
|
|
|
1977
|
He joined the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
|
|
He studied Chinese music and rubbed shoulders with many composers
|
|
who influenced him.
|
|
|
1986
|
He moved to the United States and studied at the Columbia University, |
|
to prepare a Doctorate. |
|
|

He is one of the greatest contemporary chinese composers.

- Mixing tradition and innovation, he began his period of ritual music.

1989

He composed Nine Songs, his first experimental opera inspired by poems

by Qu Yuan and performed with dance, music and drama.

50 ceramic percussion, wind and string instruments were created for performance,

by the potter Ragnar Naess.
