Liu Dehai  刘德海 ( 1937-2020 ) Pipa player, was born on August 13 in Shanghai China.

   
 

StudIes

 

From a very young age, he was attracted to several traditional Chinese instruments :

 

  -  the Pipa, a plucked string instrument - the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese violins

 

  - the Chinese trichord Sanxian and the bamboo transverse flute.

1954

He learned from the famous Pipa player Lin Shicheng  林石城 (1922 - 2006 )

1957

He was admitted to the Central Conservatory.

1962

Graduating with honors, he taught at the Central Conservatory of Music.

   

1970

He was a pipa soloist with the Central Philharmonic Orchestra and gave numerous

  concerts.
   
 

Pipa player looking for playing techniques - Composer with new ideas

  he collabored with :

1970

- the Central Philharmonic Orchestra, as Pipa Soloist.

1980-1981

- the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the West Berlin Symphony Orchestra

 

conductor : Sciji Ozawa

 

during his performance of the pipa concerto  :  Litter Sisters on the Prairie on the

 

international stage

 

ou  Music at Sunset Time : a symphonic poem for a pipa player and a symphony orchestra.

1984

He taught at the China Conservatory of Music as a Professor.

Best Educator Award at the 8th Chinese Folk Music Forum

 

 

2020

He died in Beijing, on April 11, at the age of 82.
