Don Hong-Oai  單雄威

   

1929

Don Hong-Oai  單雄威 (1929-2004) was born in  a family of merchants,

 

in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province  China.

   
  Vietnam

1936

After the death of his parents, he was sent to live in Vietnam, in a Chinese community.

 

He worked for ten years in a portrait studio and learned the basics of photography.

1950

He entered to study at the Vietnam National University.

   
  United States

1979

He fled by boat and settled in California, in San Francisco's Chinatown. 

 

He made a living selling landscape photographs, creates in his small darkroom.

   
 

Inspired by the method of Long Chin-San (1892-1995), he composed a landscape

 

by superimposing three negatives (foreground - middle ground - background)

 

with différent subjects. He could add calligraphy and a seal.

 

For these timeless images, he regularly returned to China to take new photographs

 

 

1990

His photographs attracted the attention of gallery owners and critics.

 

His works are sold in America, Asia, and Europe.

   

2004

He passed away on June 8, at the age of 75, in San Francisco, United States.
