Bernice Bing 李玉冰 ( 1936 - 1998 ) was born on April 10 in Chinatown of San Francisco
|
|
California. His father was from South China.
|
|
|
|
Following the death of her mother, when she was only six years old, she spent her
|
|
childhood in foster homes.
|
|
|
|
After high school, where she won several Art competitions, she joined the California
|
|
College of Arts and Crafts.
|
|
There, she studied with two artists who were to be the source of her inspiration :
|
|
- the American painter Richard Diebenkorn with abstract expressionism
|
|
- and the Japanese painter Saburo Hasegawa who introduced her to Zen Buddhism,
|
|
Chinese philosophers and traditional calligraphy.
|
|
|
|
She continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts.
|
1959

She graduated with a B.F.A.
|
1961
|
She graduated with a M.F.A.
|
|
Very active, she joined various Art organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area.
|
|
|
1980/1984
|
She was the Director of the South of Market Art Cultural Center.
|
|
|
1984
|
She traveled to China and studied calligraphy and Chinese traditional landscape
|
|
painting.
|
|
Upon her return, she moved to Philo California.
|
|
|
1996
|
She won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Women's Caucus for
|
|
the Arts.
|
|
|
1998
|
She died of cancer, at the age of 62, in Philo United States.
