Tyrus Wong  黄齐耀 pinyin Huang Qiyao

1910

Tyrus Wong ( 1910-2016 ) was born on October 25, in Taishan, Guangdong Province,

 

in China.

   

1920

He moved illegally, with his father to the United States. Separated from his father,

  he spent a month at the Angel Island Immigration, then they settled to Sacramento

 

before moving to Los Angeles.

   

 

His father introduced him to calligraphy.

 

He got the summer scholarship from the Otis Art Institute and then a full-time

 

scholarship.

   

1930

A graduate of Otis, he painted advertisements.

 

Hired by Disney, he became famous with his sketches for the film Bambi.

 

 

1942

Dismissed after a strike, he was hired as illustrator at  The Warmer Brothers studios

 

where he'll stay for 26 years.

 

 

 

He made greeting cards for Hallmark cards.

 

 

1968

He retired and made colorful animal Kites.

He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park  ( Hollywood Hills ) in Los Angeles, California.
