Liu Dan 刘丹 was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, in eastern China.
|
|
He grew up with his parents, both teachers, and his grandfather who introduced
|
|
him to calligraphy, poetry and Confucian classics.
|
|
|
1968
|
He was sent to the countryside to be re-educated by the peasants.
|
|
|
1978
|
He entered the Academy of Traditional Painting in Hangzhou.
|
|
He studied under the guidance of the renowned artist Ya Ming 葉明 ( 1924-2002 )
|
|
and spent two months studying the rock paintings of Dunhuang.
|
|
|
1980
|
He married Elizabeth Wichmann,
an American academic and theater artist,
|
|
who came to China to work on her thesis.
|
|
|
1981
|
He graduated from the Jiangsu Academy of Chinese Painting.
|
|
The couple moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where the young woman taught
|
|
at the university.
|
|
|
|
His ink paintings of landscapes and rocks made him known.
|
|
|
1992
|
He moved to New York United States.
|
|
|
|
The following year, the Gallery at Takashimaya in New York presented his work
|
|
in its inaugural exhibition in New York and in its galleries in Japan Tokyo, Kyoto,
|
|
Yokohama, and Osaka.
