Gao Jianfu 高剑父 ( 1879–1951 ) was born in Panyu, Guangdong province, China.

At a very young age, he learned to paint birds, flowers and insects in the workshop

of Ju Lian (1828-1904 ). |

1903
|
He entered Christain College in Guangzhou and studied drawing with a French teacher
|
|
and then with the Japanese Yamamoto Begai who encouraged him to go and study in Japan.
|
|
|
1906
|
He created the Research Society on Chinese Painting.
|
|
|
1907
|
He went to Japan with his brother and became close to Japanese artists.
|
|
|
1908
|
He held a solo exhibition in Guangzhou, and devoted himself entirely to the creation
|
|
of a new Chinese painting combining foreign techniques and new themes.
|
|
He soon became the central figure of the provincial art circle, the Lingnan School.
|
|
|
1912
|
He moved to Shanghai and started a magazine in which he published the works of painters.
|
|
|
1918
|
He returned to Guangzhou.
|
|
|
1923
|
He created the Chunshui Academy of Painting and began to teach.
|
|
|
1924
|
He directed the Foshan Academy of Arts for four years.
|
|
|
1938
|
He left to settle in Macao.
|
|
|
1951
|
He passed away on 22 May in Macau at the age of 72.
