1925

Huang Zhou  黄胄 ( 1925-1997 ) of his real name Liang-Cantang, was born on March 31,

in Lixian, in Hebei Province  China.

1939

When his father died, he had to teach drawing at a primary school in Baoji.

Wishiing to study painting, he left his job and went to Xi'an.

He studied under the direction of Zhao Wangyun and accompanied him to the North West

of the country, where he made many sketches of these distant lands.

He joined the Liberation Army.

1949

He led the artistic team of the North West military region.

1950 / 1954

He taught at the Normal School of the North West region.

1955

He was called to Beijing and became a full-time artist.

1957

He received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts for Storm in the Desert, at the World Youth Festival.

The Academy of Arts soon organized an individual exhibition of his works.

1967

During the Cultural Revolution, subject to violent criticism, he was prohibited from any

artistic action.

1977

Due to spinal cord problems, he was half paralyzed in all four limbs for one year.

His condition improving, he copied the works of the past, in his hospital room,

then started to create again. ( chickens, bamboos, chrysanthemums ).

1980

He stayed in Suzhou, in Jiangsu and drew the animals of the Chinese countryside.

1981

He was appointed Vice-President of the Institute of Chinese Painting.

He founded the Research Institute for Traditional Chinese Painting, with :

Li Keran, Cai Ruohong and Hua Junwu.

He directed the creation in Bejing, of the Yan Huang Art Museum in which he collected

an exceptional set of paintings.
