Chen Chi 程及 ( 1912-2005 ) was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, in China.
|
|
|
1926
|
To support his family, he went to work in an oil pressing plant, in Shanghai.
|
|
|
1930
|
Increasingly interested in Art, he developed a keen interest in watercolor.
|
|
|
|
He joined the pioneering research company : White Swan Art Club.
|
|
|
1937
|
He was a professor of painting at the Wu Pen and Huai Chiu High School in Shanghai.
|
|
|
1942
|
He entered St John University in Shanghai to teach drawing and watercolor.
|
|
In the same year, he published his first monograph : Chen Chi Watercolors. |
|
|
|
Thanks to a programme of cultural exchange, he went to the United States |
|
to continue his research in painting and to make his work known.
|
|
|
1947
|
First exhibition at the Village Art Center New York. |
|

Ford Motor, Company Magazine, Collier's Magazine Sports Illustrated and Horizon.

1964
|
He
was elected academician by the National Academy of Design.

|
|
1966
|
He
received the Gold Medal of the National Art Club for the whole of his
career.
|
|
|
1999
|
Artist
recognized in the world, a museum bearing his name opened at
the Shanghai
|
|
Jiao Tong University Campus.
|
|
|
2000
|
The
France devoted him a great retrospective to the Castle of Versailles.
|
|
|
|
His works are in the collections of The Smithsonian Institute, The Cleveland Institute,
|
|
The Metropolitan Art Museum , The National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania,
|
|
and Academy of Fine Arts, Butler Institute..
|
|
|
2005
|
He died at the age of 93.

In April of 1999 the Chen Chi Art Museum was officially opened in Shanghai, not only as a place

|
to display Chen Chi’s painting, but also to promote an international exchange of Art and education.
|
|
|
China’s President, Jiang Zemin, himself wrote the dedicatory inscription “Chen Chi Art Museum”
|
|
|
as an act of personal respect and tribute to the artist.
