Zhang Wei 张伟 was born in a rich family in Beijing, China.

He grew up in the home of his paternal grandfather, a wealthy businessman
|

During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to Linqi province, for rehabitation.

Back in Beijing, he was refused admission to the Beijing Academy of fine arts,

|
due to his capitalist ancestors. He joined the No Name group, collective of unofficial
|
|
artists : Ma Kelu, Zhao Wenliang, Yang Yushu, Shi Zhenyu...

|
He worked as a stage designer at the Beijing Opera.

its opening, Zhang Wei organized another unofficial, at his home in Beijing
