|
Ko Si-Chi 柯锡杰 was born on August 10, in a family of
ten children. He is the 8th.
|
|
|
1941
|
After the reversal of his father's fortune, merchant in Tainan and the death of his mother,
|
|
his brother Ko Sicheng, took charge of his education and introduced him to English,
|
|
music, and literature.
|
|
He entered the Higher School of Mechanics in Kaoshiung.
|
|
|
1947
|
After graduating, he worked in the chemical company Alcali and discovered photography
|
|
thanks to the Japanese director who offered him a camera. He then devoted himself
|
|
to his new passion.
|
|
|
1959
|
As he won three prizes in competitions offered by the brands Sakura, Fuji and Mitsubishi-
|
|
Gekko, he decided to go to Japan to study at the College of Photography in Tokyo.
|
|
|
|
For two years, he studied new technological processes and discovered the great names
|
|
of Western Photography in the galleries of Tokyo, with the director Koen Shigemoni
|
|
with whom he got close to.
|
|
|
1962
|
Graduated from this prestigious photography school, he returned to Taiwan and went
|
|
to Kaohsiung in a collective exhibition where he showed his work. Noticed, the Shin-Sheng
|
|
Daily News offered him his first solo exhibition.
|
|
|
1963
|
The major exhibition in April, at the National Museum of Art of Taipei was a success.
|
|
He became the current photographer of the advertising agency Kuhua Advertising Company.
|
|
At the same time, he photographed the company of Alvin Ailey dancers during their
|
|
rehearsals.
|
|
|
1967
|
He moved to the United States, in New York.
|
|
Presentation of his work at the Kennedy Memorial Hall in Hawaii and the following year
|
|
at the City Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
|
|
|
1971
|
He opened his own studio in the Union Square neighborhood and worked with advertising
|
|
and fashion agencies, or with the magazines Cosmopolitan, Essence, House Beautiful, and
|
|
Harper's Bazar.
|
|
|
1979
|
He abandoned everything and had left six months, towards the Mediterranean shores
|
|
and North Africa.
|
|
He came back with a lot of pictures that reflect his personal style.
|
|

1980
|
Back in Taiwan, the American Cultural Center devoted an exhibition to him.

His work highlighted by the process of Dye Transfer was very appreciated..

1985
|
After his marriage to the dancer and choreographer Jessie Fan, the couple traveled
|
|
to China several times and moved to New York, to allow the dancer to undergo training
|
|
and acquire an original choreographic expression.

|
|
1990
|
The Contemporary Art Gallery and the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts presented a major
|
|
retrospective of the artist's work. .
|
|
|
1993
|
The couple returned to Taiwan and found in Taipei, the Ko and Dancers troupe.
|
|
|
2001
|
Ko Si-Chi set up his workshop in the north of Taiwan, on the hillsides of Tamshui.
|
|
He realized Home Town Native People, his long series of portraits of Taiwanese.
|
|
|
2005
|
The publishing house Cercle d'Art decided to gather the photographs of his travels
|
|
in the United States, Mainland China, African deserts and Mediterranean shores.
|
|
|
2006
|
He was awarded with the National Prize for the Arts.
