1943

Zhang Hongtu was born in a muslim family in Pingliang, Gansu province, China.

 

He grew up in Beijing.

 

 

1964

He studied in the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Beijing.
   

1969

He graduated from the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Beijing.

 

He worked as a designer in a jewelery import-export company.
   

1982

He left China for the United States and settled in New York, to continue his artistic career.

   

1987

He participated in the founding of the United Overseas Chinese Association,

 

with Ai Weiwei, Li Shuang and Qu Leilei.

 

One morning, on the box of outmail Quaker, he found a resemblance with Mao

 

and began to create his Long Live Chairman Mao series.
   

 

He lives and works in New York, U.S.A.
