Vice-president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts

   

1955

Xu Bing was born in Chongqing, Sichuan province, in southwest China.

 

He grew up in Beijing.

   

1977

He enrolled at the C.A.F.A. to study printmaking.

   

1987

He obtained a master degree in Fine Arts.

   

1987/1990

His work Book from the Sky composed of four thousands of Chinese characters

  invented, gave him international recognotion.
   

1990

He moved to the United States and created his studio.

   

1999

He received a grant from the Mac Arthur Foundation for the originality

 

and creativity of his work.

   

2004

His installation Where does the dust collect Itself ? using dust he collected

 

in Manhattan after November 11, received the award for the Artes Mundi Foundation.

   

2008

In March, he was appointed Vice President of the Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing;

 

he returned to live in China.

   

2012

He published From Point-to- Point, a novel written with pictograms

 

collected over the years.

   

2013

With Phoenix, the artist created a sculpture ( two birds ) fabricated from material

 

found of construction sites in Beijing.

 

It took over two years to create this installation.
