1889

Gao Qifeng  高奇峰 ( 1889-1933 ) whose real name is Weng, was born on January 13,

 

in Panyu, Guangdong Province  China. He was the 5th child in the family.

   
 

Orphaned at a very young age, he learnt painting from one of his brothers,

 

and worked as a servant, then he painted lampshades in a glass factory,

 

in Guangzhou.

   

1906

He went to Japan to study with his brother Gao Jianfu ( 1879-1951 ), under  

 

the supervision of Tanla Raisho ( 1868-1940 )

 

He developed his own style, mixing Chinese painting, Japanese painting 

 

and Western techniques.

 

He mainly painted fauna, flora, and landscapes.

   

1912

He went with his brother to Shanghai, and they published a journal on Art  

 

and Politics : the True Record

   

1918

Back in Guangzhou, he taught Art at the Industrial School and organised

 

the first Art Exhibition in Guangdong Province.

   

 

He opened his own studio to teach his art.

   

1925

He was appointed Professor at the University of Lingnan.

   

1931

He won the Prize of the World Exhibition of Belgium.

 

He was appointed representative of the Chinese government, for the

 

China - Germany exhibition in Berlin.

   

1936

On November 2nd, he died of tuberculosis, in Shanghai, at the age of 45.

 

On December 27th, he was buried, by order of the government, in the Qixia

  mountain.
