1901

Hua Tianyou ( 1901-1986 ), named Shunqing 舜卿, was born in Huaiyin, in Jiangsu

 

Province, in China.

   

1924/1932

A graduate of the Normal School in Jiangsu Province, he took drawing lessons

 

at the Fine Arts School of Shanghai.

   

1933

He accompanied Xu Beihong, in Paris, for the traveling exhibition of Chinese painting.

 

He decided to stay in France, and joined the studio of sculptor Henri Bouchard (1875-1960 ).

   

1934

He entered the National school of Fine Arts and the Academy Julian, in the workshop of

 

François Niclausse (1879-1958).

   

1939

He graduated from ENSBA Paris ( sculpture Department ).

   

 

During the war, he worked for two years, in the workshop of Charles Despiau (1874-1946)

 

at La Grande Chaumière.

   

1941

He won the silver medal with his sculpture Sortie de Bain and the following year,

 

the Gold medal at the Salon de Printemps.

   

1948

Upon his return from China, he was appointed Professor at the National Academy of Art

 

in Beijing, and Director of the sculpture department.

   
 

In addition to drawing and sculpture, his public commissions, such as :

 

The Memorial to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen square ( 1959 ),made him famous.

   

1986

He passed away at the age of 85.
