1903

Guan Zilan, also known as Violet Kwan, was born in January, in Shanghai, China. .

 

Her family oftextile manufacturers, is from Nanhai, Guangdong Province.

   
 

She studied painting at the Shenzhou Girls School, then at Shanghai Art University.

 

She was a student of Chen Baoyi.

   

 

She was one of the first artists to introduce Fauvism into China.

1927

After graduating, she moved to Japan to deepen her studies at Bunka Gakuin

 

in Tokyo.

 

Her works participated in various exhibitions.

   

1930

She returned to China, and held an exhibition in Shanghai.

   

1938

She got married and had two children.

   

1958

She worked at the Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History and became

 

a member of the Association of Chinese Artists. 

   
 

She stopped painting after the Cultural Revolution.

   

1986

She died on June 30 at the age of 83, in Shanghai.

   
  Her works continue to participate in numerous exhibitions :

1998

Portrait of Miss L. (1929 ) was selected for the Guggenheim Museum exhibition,

 

New York.
